"now I'm turning pages backwards / looking for just one clear ladder / staring at your empty pages / with deep blue eyes..."
The blissfully meditative, tribal, baroque pop bloodletting and survivorship of "Backwards in Blue" by Brooklyn, New York queer indie artist (and sound healing mystic) Elly Kace, feels as grand as it does artfully tense. Like the ratcheting pulse of a roller coaster slowly ascending up before the fall, the shifting orchestrations swim in pain and unease while fluttering stunning vocals feel like the sun's glow behind storm clouds. The track described by the artist as "a luminous baroque pop ballad on ancestral memory, intergenerational trauma, and the sacred act of healing through remembrance" feels somehow cathartic even to us mere listeners. This communal sharing of all our connective tissue, strains, bruises and all is how music can unite, even heal not just one of us but many of us at once.
I gravitate towards music of all sorts but maybe fall more easily to the melancholy, to songs that is relatable because life is painful, at least for the empathetic. All that said, there is nothing better than a melancholy song that is also hopeful.
