"the slither under your skin / you cannot let them in / the slither under your skin / you cannot let... / them / in..."
The tightly wound garage rock, post punk proggy punches of "Snake In The Grass" by Dartmouth, Nova Scotia Canada's Human Missile Crisis, will undoubtedly make you want to mosh and dance at the same time, moance?? danosh?? I am thoroughly digging, appreciating the chunky full throttle forward progression, cadence that stomps and head bangs away. To be honest the brightness in the distorted guitar sounds had me thinking of The Strokes in a way but the manic rawness also had me thinking of old school surf punk like Agent Orange or hints of stoner metal ala Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs or post punk angles like Joy Division or maybe an amalgam of all these sub genres. The main thing is the tight progressive musicality here with the broader alt rock, punk, post punk and garage rock artful cherry picking. "Snake In The Grass" thrashes but swings too and the break with that lead guitar hook kills as well as the quiet moments when the bass takes center stage to amazing bridge ("the slither under your skin / you cannot let them in / the slither under your skin / you cannot let... / them / in...") that actually had me flash on both The Jam and Interpol. What a fucking wonderfully artful track.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed)
[Snake in the Grass has multiple themes within it and is the more dancy upbeat song for us. At first when writing it, memories returned to me of a time when I found myself in the desert of Canada.
A place called Osoyoos, British Columbia. When walking through a vineyard there I noticed “Danger rattlesnake crossing” signs posted around, and you could see their slither trails in the sand. A friend said to me “Look out for snakes in the grass” and it always stuck with me. This phrase used for hundreds of years describes a treacherous person, a person you think is your friend, or even lover who could turn around and stab you in the back at any moment. We all have encountered them in our life and have stories to tell regarding how they hurt us or attempted to hurt us. This one is part of my story.]
Human Missile Crisis is D.J. Vaters (Guitar and Vocals), Justin Boutilier (Bass and Backing Vocals) and Matt MacIsaac (Drums and being handsome).
