"You are still learning / That beauty it is blooming / And when you are talking / You say you don’t know / I say I don’t know / But I know I know I know..."
The beautifully grand artistic abstractions of "Rise", by Christchurch bred / Melbourne based multi-disciplinary artist / musician Mayzie, feel like an explosion of surreal light in the middle of a desert. I am loving the propulsive strut of the drumming, the tactile throttle of the guitar rhythms, the winding bass lines and especially Mayzie's lavish vocal performance, full front with arabesque sort of post punk operatic impressions that just lift you up. Mayzie is so unique that adjacent artists don't leap in my brain but I do feel splinters of Dead Can Dance, Florence & the Machine, Cocteau Twins, Bush Tetras at least within the artistic curtains of "Rise". The blend here is like an art rockian collision of post punk, shoegaze, dream pop, maybe even fantasy rock full of not only abstractions and drama and melancholia but whimsy too. As I listened on repeat I kept thinking that while this is the kind of song that absolutely is pointed toward adults, I feel like it casts a hypnotic spell that teens and even small children would feel and gravitate to as well (or maybe it is the small child wonder within me).
That beauty it is blooming
And when you are talking
You say you don’t know
I say I don’t know
But I know I know I know
You will rise x4
And when you are hoping
Your habits are forming
And when you are speaking
You say you don’t know
I say I don’t know
But I know I know I know
Yes, I will be swimming inside this track a lot. As an added aside, Mayzie feels to me, like if her halcyon days were back around the mid-80's, that she would have felt perfectly right as rain performing with Bowie or opening up for him. I feel that a lot. Mayzie besides her solo art is recognized as one-half of the dream-gaze duo VHS Dream, and is the lead singer/songwriter for Melbourne's shoegaze ensemble, Oceans.

Mayzie is a multi-disciplinary artist and musician, originally from Christchurch and now based in Melbourne. Mayzie is recognized as one-half of the dream-gaze duo VHS Dream, and is the lead singer/songwriter for Melbourne's shoegaze ensemble, Oceans. Drawing inspiration from a broad spectrum of influences, Mayzie's music weaves together elements from the lyricism and timbres of fellow Kiwis such as David and Hamish Kilgour, Chris Knox, Sarah-Mary Chadwick, and Roy Montgomery. The echoes of shoegaze icons like Slowdive and the Cocteau Twins resonate in her work, creating a melancholic and dreamy soundscape tailored for those with 'short attention spans.' Mayzie's artistry is ornamented with noteworthy moments, including a collaboration with the iconic Hamish Kilgour of The Clean during his Melbourne shows in 2021, supporting Australian shoegaze legends Flyying Colours and Lowtide in 2014/5 and embarking on tours across Australia and New Zealand with her band Oceans. Mayzie's solo endeavors pay credit to her ability to craft emotive, atmospheric compositions that transport listeners to otherworldly realms. With a musical palette that blends nostalgia and innovation, Mayzie promises to be at the forefront of Australia's alternative music scene for a long time to come. Mayzie is heading to the US in March as part of New Collossus.
