"somewhere out in California / smoked yourself to paranoia / never thought you would fit in / hours lost you wont soon get..."
The vast alt rock punch and post punk melancholia of "Family Portrait" by Orlando's Porch Coffin, and from their latest EP "Dogs Bite", is a lot of things, all of them crafted beautifully. Within the darkly drawn sound full of amped up acoustic strumming, mournful lead guitar cries, throttling bass and drums fully engaged, jangly rhythm guitars and Evan Blaine's evocative sandpaper howl that sort of feels like an amalgam of Iggy Pop and Richard Butler (Psychedelic Furs), you are fully engaged into the moody discourse, the emotional vastness. I am loving the songwriting construction too that turns up the lyrical imagery, the storytelling that feels like memories of different degrees of struggle following you like a ghost. I am also taken aback by the the bands choice to create a song that basically has no repeating chorus but instead, back to back verses, non lexical refrains and an outro that serves as either a single chorus or bridge to nowhere. These decisions make "Family Portrait" so much more filmic, the narrative feeling more like sonic poetry than the lyrics to a song. Amidst the kind of transgressive songwriting, the somber reflections are also just plain fucking beautiful.

LYRICS
Smoked yourself to paranoia
Never thought you would fit in
Hours lost you wont soon get
Back to barracks with the orphans
A life your chose but never wanted
Drink until you can forget
Drinking's all that you have left
Park the car in Oklahoma
You're a hometown supernova
Never took you for religious
Can't deny your superstitions
Broken homes and family portraits
Tobacco stains that feel nostalgic
Drink until you can forget
Drinking's all that you have left
You're a hometown supernova
Never took you for religious
Can't deny your superstitions
Broken homes and family portraits
Tobacco stains that feel nostalgic
Drink until you can forget
Drinking's all that you have left
And it follows, follows your everywhere (x6)
