"I’ll never forget you boy / I never get to dry my eyes / I lost control / now I can’t reach you..."
The darkly wrapped bruises and beauty of "Feelings for Violence" by Britney Freud, the solo project of Dragut Lugalzagosi (former frontman of Copenhagen's The Great Dictators), pulls you in close putting you in a seriously sort of dreamy post punk vibe. The heaviness is felt within the pounding snap of the drums, the pulsing bass lines that feel like they purposely step into over modulated territory, the tubular sounds / ambient ghostly sonics whether a wash of synths or guitars or both and Dragut's slow drawl vocal countenance that feels soaked in introspective places, haunted but ready to impart communal embraces for those who deserve them. Go with me on this, I am feeling a a crisp collision of Bauhaus, Interpol, She Wants Revenge and French Police with a patina of Roxy Music (don't worry, the more you think about it, it will make sense to you).
The song is about loss. Read what the artist has to say:
Dragut explains: "An important friend relationship broke down, and I felt lost, so I wrote this song and went to therapy. It helped. I still love him."
I am loving the emotional / musical complexities and nuances. This track seeps into you slowly but deeply, the best combination of things.
-Robb Donker Curtius
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[In the music video we follow a burned-out young man and his uncontrolled dance moves. He ends up in nature to let off steam and collapses in helplessness, and along the way we see glimpses of a forest bear, an embryonic monster and Britney Freud.
Britney Freud, BF, is a kind of superhero of emotions and a character we can all be - fearless, sensitive and loving. BF is an emotional punk and a spirit of love without gender, who wants to create more openness about emotions in boys and men.
Dragut elaborates: “We men dominate in several discouraging statistics, and I have known boys and men who have committed violence, self-harm and suicide. They have lacked a language for their emotions and a sense of being seen. I often have difficulty opening up and finding my way around my system, and I still find that it can be a taboo as a man to talk about emotions. So let's just have it: More love between men.”]
LYRICS
I’ll never forget you boy
I never get to dry my eyes
I lost control
now I can’t reach you
you couldn’t see me change
it left me fired up
yeah I tried
and I tried
who’s gonna raise the living
I love you still but you made feel
feelings for violence
turn up your violins
take me to the slaughter
thank you for the pat on the back and all
I’ll be your animal
you lift me lower
human down
and you just stared at me
I won’t let you, I won’t let you
see me play dirt
who’s gonna raise the living…
feelings may occur
clawing through my eyes
electric grunts of all sorts
reeking with a force
I won’t
take no
more
smh
who’s gonna raise the living…
turn it up now
turn it up now
turn up your violins

THE FACTS AS WE KNOW THEM

You get Britney Freud, a new solo project by Dragut Lugalzagosi (former frontman of The Great Dictators), who wants to shake up what it means to be a man - and a human being.
The debut single 'Feelings For Violence' is vulnerable and dirty bubblegum punk for those who like Pixies, The Horrors and long hugs. The song was mixed by Brian Batz (Bisse, Trentemøller, etc.) and contains the ugliest violin solo, an emotional vocal from the bottom of all organs and words about difficult feelings in the middle of a friend's heartbreak.
Britney Freud, Dragut Lugalzagosi solo project,, formerly of The Great Dictators, alt rock, post punk, bubblegum punk, crooner punk, romance wave, "Feelings For Violence" Official Video, thoughtful lyrics,
