"Imagine the pressure all around you / A never ending sound but / Always staying calm & delivered..."
The joyful proggy power pop / alt rock panorama of "Calm & Delivered" by Massachusetts based power-emo band Cape Crush, and from their upcoming debut album "Place Memory" (dropping May 2026), is as utterly magnetic as it is kinetically dense. Whether you call this song (broadly) emo punk or power pop or indie rock or a combination of all those genres, this kind of sound is not easy to craft. I mean if not done earnestly from the ground up it can feel too surfacy or 'manufactured', it can suffer from style over substance or feel like pandering but Cape Crush feels like neither of those poseur-eee things at all. The feeling here is so absolutely authentic, so artfully composed and emotionally drawn as to feel more creatively birthed than composed, if that makes any sense. A lot of that sensation has to do with the genre blending, the hints of pop and alt rock, punk, twee, emo generationally deep. And it has to do with the amazingly potent melodies sung and played all in a perfectly interconnected way. It has to do with those super crunchy guitars solidly in the pocket and interweaving lead lines (love them), the bold bass and drums dance and, of course, guitarist Ali Lipman's evocative vocal countenance that feels saturated in a personal cathartic wash.
From LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[“‘Calm & Delivered’ is about the pressure to be emotionally regulated when everything around you is over-stimulating,” Lipman shares. “It’s inspired by my journey as a parent, which is often too loud, as well as my journey as a woman, where setting boundaries is often interpreted poorly… So it’s really about finding your inner-power as a woman and not being afraid of your rage or frustration.”
And the determination to find and cultivate that strength can be traced to what that new friend told her on that otherwise ordinary night: “She implored me to ‘go crazy sometimes,’” Lipman adds. “To stop waiting in line, to stop toeing the line, to stop being afraid to throw my weight around sometimes.”]
Really loving the emotional and sonic thrust of "Calm & Delivered" and I thought of an amalgam of artists like Superchunk, Slant 6, The Rezillos Sunny Day Real Estate but with more emotional bloodletting.
More LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[Cape Crush is a power-emo band hailing from the North Shore of Massachusetts. The band consists of Ali Lipman on guitar and vocals, James Christopher on guitar, Jake Letizia on bass guitar, and Mike on drums.]
[That ethos has carried Cape Crush in their first few years as a band, bringing together longtime mainstays of the New England DIY and hardcore scenes (Lipman is treasurer and co-founder of Salem’s new all-ages space Moon Base One), with Lipman joined by guitarist and confidant James Christopher, bassist Jake Letizia, and new drummer recruit Mike O’Toole, who has stepped in for co-founder and compatriot Cody Rico, forever an honorary member who hung up his drumsticks due to health reasons.]
[With its euphoric and anthemic drive, “Calm & Delivered,” is a swirling propulsion of emo, post-hardcore, and alt-rock, channeling the band’s shared love for The Get Up Kids and Weakerthans with flourishes of that dog. and The Breeders coursing through its sonic energy. It’s also the first single from Cape Crush’s forthcoming debut album, Place Memory, set for release May 1 on Wanna Hear It Records.]
[“We’re known for our upbeat power-emo songs, with big leads, big harmonies, and big refrains,” Lipman shares. “This song perfectly encapsulates what we do best. There’s plenty of surprises to come on Place Memory, but ‘Calm & Delivered’ is the perfect definition of a Cape Crush anthem.”]
LYRICS
Imagine the pressure all around you
A never ending sound but
Always staying calm & delivered
Quiet, you can never find it
Every gear is grinding but
You always stay calm & delivered
Crying, life took you for a ride but
Never left you fine
And still you stayed calm & delivered
A fire burning bright inside you
You always tried to hide it but
Just stay calm & delivered
What can I say?
When I don’t believe it happened that way
What can I do?
When I’m still in love with you
Don’t stand in line
Pulling the rope
Counting the lines on the interstate
Don’t stand in line
You were a friend when I needed one most through the worst
If you can’t stop bleeding on the bathroom floor then
You’ll need a friend through the worst of it
Cause’ I can’t stop bleeding, no I can’t stop bleeding
Imagine drowning in a crowd with
People all around
And trying to stay calm & delivered
Resourceful, hopefully not forceful
Adherence to the course
When searching for some love and connection
Liar! everything is harder
Underneath the water
Including staying calm & delivered
I’m tired of shuffling on floorboards
Feeling kind of bored of
Always staying calm & delivered
What can I say?
When I don’t believe it happened that way
What can I do?
When I’m still in love with you
Don’t stand in line
Pulling the rope
Counting the lines on the interstate
Don’t stand in line
You were a friend when I needed one most through the worst
If you can’t stop bleeding on the bathroom floor then
You’ll need a friend through the worst of it
Cause’ I can’t stop bleeding, no I can’t stop bleeding
Don’t stand in line pulling the rope counting the lines on the interstate
Don’t stand in line - you were my friend
Say you’ll heal me
(sometimes I’m bleeding)
Talk to the ghost in the corner
Say you’ll heal me
(sometimes I’m bleeding)
You were a friend when I needed one
Say you’ll heal me
(sometimes I’m bleeding)
Talk to the ghost in the corner
Well, I thought of that girl on the porch swing
Never counted a line in her life.
