"I saw a vision of jesus / appear on the white wall / too late to call on a friend / I played all the mind tricks like I’m playing in the matrix..."
The grounded whimsy and ethereal wonder of "Mind Tricks" by Lucerne, Switzerland's Pet Owner, an ostensibly solo project of singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Lea Mathis, wraps around you easily, gets in your head and heart and might have you gazing at the moon, smiling. The sonic amalgam that I referred to (on a past review) as a "serendipitous colliding metamorphosis of bedroom / lo-fi / emotronica / folk and maybe even 80's new age" I feel once again but with more heady patina's of sounds some soft, some edgy. Mathis' vocal countenance, with that lovely accented wash, not only feels so introspective but, at times, double fisted too, swinging punches maybe at inner demons. The blend of airy folksy organic sonics against highly compressed electronica and ambient pop swells push on each other creating not sonic dissonance but emotional dissonance and I love these oppositional tones, attitudes, feelings.
"Mind Tricks" from Pet Owner's sophomore album "Second Nature" dropped on February 27, 2026, via Red Brick Records, a follow up to Mathis' well regarded / embraced debut "Natural Behaviour" that dropped in 2022.
Pet Owner draws such wonderful sonic pictures that feel destined to float up into space surely to be discovered by alien beings.

Lyrics
I saw a vision of jesus
appear on the white wall
too late to call on a friend
I played all the mind tricks
like I’m playing in the matrix
every time at midnight, I see troubles and I can’t go back
a spider’s dance in the fire
a seemingly perfect picture drawn higher
how can one not disappear in the blank
in a web of FX, I am caught up in a vortex
every time at midnight, I see troubles and I can’t go back
I think that I’m a goddamn, goddamn illusion
butter in the sun, a sweet infusion
like pouring rain on summer days
melted ice cubes in warm hands
I’m feeling like a goddamn, I am an illusion
I‘m feeling like a goddamn, like an illusion
I should have gone to bed
instead I’m wasting my time singing love songs
until I’m bored of myself
just a simulation of a warm sensation
every time at midnight, I see troubles and I can’t go back
I think that I’m a goddamn, goddamn illusion
butter in the sun, a sweet infusion
like pouring rain on summer days
melted ice cubes in warm hands
I’m feeling like a goddamn, I am an illusion
I‘m feeling like a goddamn, like an illusion
touch four things
to be normal again
god damn, I try to be normal again
god damn, I try to be real
god damn, I try to be normal again
god damn, I try to be real
god damn, I try to be normal again
god damn, I try to be real

Second Nature, Pet Owner’s sophomore album, will be released on February 27, 2026, via Red Brick Records. Behind the project is Swiss-based musician Lea Mathis, who gained international recognition with her debut Natural Behaviour (2022). After around 70 concerts across Switzerland, Germany, France, and Belgium, she now presents an album that lightly continues the musical language of her debut. There, she already found a skilled balance between experimentation and catchy melodies. In the same way, the new album repeatedly hints at big pop moments that then develop in unexpectedly different directions.
