"The one / thing we couldn’t see / Well, It’s done / Now you just have to live with it..."
The rolling wistful wheels of melody and hall of mirrors of "Missing Pieces", by Gothenburg Sweden recording artist / producer / songwriter / composer Jonas Lundvall, with it's propulsive downbeat, orchestral sweep and dreamy storytelling is not one thing but many. To me (an imperfect connoisseur of different kinds of music from different eras) the wonderful puzzle pieces here feel birthed from ghosts embodied in books / movies that took time to breathe and maybe even from crates of vinyl records in someone's attic. I am feeling hints of or artistic adjacencies to 60's Euro folk pop like the amazing Peter Sarstedt and The Kinks, as well as 70's pop in the vein of Godley & Creme or maybe some iteration / amalgam of that kind of sound, very broad filmic pop really. There are patinas of Beatles psychedelia within the singular mellotron-esque sound and acid drops of dirty electric guitar too, as well as mournful horns / strings. The 60's sadness especially European sadness born out of footprints of World War 2 and all the devastation and trauma is there too, at least in my minds eye as Lundvall's lyrical imagery stabs me in the gut. Kudos to the production touches and the musical drop at around 3:25 where the orchestration feel at war with each other, beautifully dramatic, awesome.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[“Missing Pieces” is a reflective and melodic release from Jonas Lundvall, blending the warmth of 60s and 70s songwriting with a modern production. Built around rich string arrangements and brass performed by real musicians, the song carries a cinematic feel – subtly nodding to classic film and Bond-inspired atmospheres. Lyrically, it focuses on letting go of self-criticism and finding the missing keys that unlock a sense of inner freedom. Timeless in spirit, yet grounded in the present.]
[Inspired by the likes of Wes Anderson and Ruben Östlund, Jonas Lundvall is at his heart a storyteller, even if the media for his storytelling didn't happen by chance. Recording artist, producer, songwriter and composer are just a few of the titles one could pin on Lundvall, with an innovative and ambitious indie soundscape he paints vivid pictures that teleports the listener right into his own abstract world.]
Lyrics
The one
thing we couldn’t see
Well, It’s done
Now you just have to live with it
I still keep it to close to me
Fresh in my memory
Will always be part of me
From now on
The edge of a mystery
The force of an enemy
floating along with me
In this inner storm
And how could I love you more?
Alone on an endless shore
And those missing pieces
Far beneath the surface
A blank stare fixed on the ground
Discerning our precious time
Disappearing
High above the mountains
Time can sometimes be a friend
But will always beat you in the end
Keeping it close to me
Fresh in my memory
You will always walk next to me
From now on
The weight of the victory
And The force of an enemy
floating along with me
In this inner storm
And how could I love you more
Alone on an endless shore
And those missing pieces
Far below the surface
A blank stare fixed on the ground
Discerning our precious time
Going up in smoke
High above the mountains
The one
thing we couldn’t see
Well, It’s done
Now you just have to live with it
I still keep it to close to me
Fresh in my memory
Will always be part of me
From now on
The edge of a mystery
The force of an enemy
floating along with me
In this inner storm
And how could I love you more?
Alone on an endless shore
And those missing pieces
Far beneath the surface
A blank stare fixed on the ground
Discerning our precious time
Disappearing
High above the mountains
Time can sometimes be a friend
But will always beat you in the end
Keeping it close to me
Fresh in my memory
You will always walk next to me
From now on
The weight of the victory

In this inner storm
And how could I love you more
Alone on an endless shore
And those missing pieces
Far below the surface
A blank stare fixed on the ground
Discerning our precious time
Going up in smoke
High above the mountains
