"listening to Lou Reed / we're in a shopping mall / there's nowhere to grow up that doesn't make you feel left behind..."
The double mirrored slacker angst of "Soccer Ball Song" by snailosaur, Brooklyn based indie rock band comprised of brothers Paul and Dean, sucks you back into prime sonic / emotional real estate from times before. The jangly guitars, the 90's East Coast indie vibe, the sparse quiet loud thing and the nakedly droll vocal countenance that feels adjacent to Pavement's Stephen Malkmus or Lou Reed, all stick like Elmer's glue. It is a vibe that one can attempt to create with varying degrees of success but I like that snailosaur doesn't feel poseur about it but just sounds like what they sound like and I appreciate that.
"Soccer Ball Song" seems to ruminate on culture cues, on trends and how we can lose ourselves trying to fit into cults of personality and fashion. The unsettling sense of not feeling like yourself but at the same time not know who your are really and desperately trying to connect with others. I realized at some point that it is easier to gaslight yourself than you think it might be.
Besides, who else hasn't felt like they were born at the wrong time.
Cool (beans).
