"I'm on a grandiose patio / Bright rays shine down upon me / Oh dramatic are those days / They make no apologies in this heat..."
The fluid fractured grand folk anomalies, ghosts and wooden spoon of "In This Heat" by Woonsocket Rhode Island's "pioneers of dilapidated yachtcore" Favourite Armchair, and from their eponymous full-length album, sneak up on you in wonderful ways. While you fall into lumbering bass lines, acoustic guitar, sprite banjo, all manner of organic percussions and maybe even field recordings, the narrator opines about the pervasive sun or maybe the oppressiveness of a lot of things. The rustic reveals and what feels like dada-istic street poetry feels vague enough to be sagely and strange enough to pass the experimental stoner test.
My understanding is that all the songs on the album are either in the embryonic state or fully formed, that is to say they are how they are until they are not as they might be re-contexualize or added to etc. I love this aesthetic, I like how this collaborative outfit of Trevor Chisholm (Guitar/Bongos), Dan Roda (Drums/Synth/Bass), Shaun Dubreuil (Wooden Spoon), Dave Maki (Banjo), Raime Masket (Bag/Box), Dave Tierney (Piano/Glockenspiel), Matthew Riemer (Mandolin) and Gabe Cooper (Violin) seem to be happy to reveal themselves in immediate ways. I think of a lot of us artists who don't put out their artful works because it is not just so. Half the time nothing gets created, you know what I mean?
I'm on a grandiose patio
Bright rays shine down upon me
Oh dramatic are those days
They make no apologies in this heat
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
About the album:
[This is the working version of the Favourite Armchair album, recording is still in progress and tracks will be updated as they evolve. The album is on track to be finalized and publicly announced by mid-2026.
The self-titled debut from Favourite Armchair is an abrupt and fastidious rumpus of naturecore hymns, rustic patchwork sound collages, and dilapidated yacht folk ballads that typically pit themes of persistence and love against natural decay in a world that feels as much happenstance as it is meticulously real and deliberate in both the austerity of its ramshackle construction and in the stalwart stateliness of its disrepair.]

I'm on a grandiose patio
Bright rays shine down upon me
Oh dramatic are those days
They make no apologies in this heat
In the heat
In the heat
In the heat
In the heat
Flamboyantly high temperatures
The drench of high humidity
A reference to fire
And its intransient morbidity in this heat
The drench of high humidity
A reference to fire
And its intransient morbidity in this heat
In the heat
In the heat
In the heat
In the heat
In the street
A heart beats fast
In the street
Where we meet
No matter when
In the heat
In the heat
In the heat
In the street
A heart beats fast
In the street
Where we meet
No matter when
In the heat
In that heat

Pioneers of dilapidated yachtcore and the Woonsocket Sound, Favourite Armchair endeavour to assemble inviting avant folk songs about life. Through a peculiar process that combines asynchronous human collaboration with crudely recorded sounds of the world, the band presents its artifacts of ostensibly ragged splendour to the music community with love.
