band portrait by gabriel liston
The glowing indie rock embers of "Peace" by Portland trio Golden Tiles, and the first single from their upcoming debut album "Set Up on the Leaves", feels instantly wistful opening with Oliver Stafford's distorted chunky guitar, Joshua James Amberson's somber bass lines and Justin Hocking's supportive tom tom beat. When Stafford's vocals drop in, gentle, a bit lonely but with hope around the edges, the musical bed gets heavier, swirling with more active sonic discord and bewilderment. I love the atmosphere, the sense that anything can happen next. Now mind you, the song almost ends before it begins, so maybe it is a prelude of sorts but, damn, I am crushing on the mystery of it all, the melancholia and the possibilities.
My previous thoughts about Golden Tiles was reflected this way on a previous review:
"feels like the personification of many things, youthful abandon, tender joy, ID spawned art, free associations and friendships that you will remember forever based on creating things together...this kind of sound, equal parts 80's power pop / 90's punk / indie rock feels like freedom."
AND I feel this here too and look forward to delving into their debut album.
