"well, if I ever found the words to say / I'd take it back and save it for another day / here we go, here we go, here we go..."
The exuberant 80's-esque synthpop highs of "Coffee Black Please", by Long Beach / L.A. dream pop / indie rock outfit Extreme Sports Club, not only gets under you skin but travels to your feet and heart in special ways. Some artists who are inspired by the 80's / 90's new wave sound craft what feel like weak facsilmes drenched in only nostalgia riding on tropes alone but not here. I am loving the thoroughly hooky bass lines, the synth ambience the swinging cadence, the percolatting rhythms and vocal countenance that feels beautifully alt pop forward eschewing that 80's drawl but instead becomes a part of the iterations of 80's music from new wave pop sides of early Depeche Mode, Haircut 100, Aztec Camera (Oblivious comes to mind), The Cure and the sort of Tropical Punk edges of 2000's bands like Abe Vigoda and Roses (two of my favs that I had both the pleasure of seeing).

Vince writes songs. He used to be depressed because he grew up in a tunnel and lived with mice and baby bears (cubs), which sounds cute, but they would eat all his food and food costs a lot of money. He didn’t skateboard in the tunnel because it was awfully dark and this was way before night vision was invented. But, as you can see from the album cover, he has eradicated all sadness from his life through the power of mental karate. Surely this plays an unspecified role in his songwriting, we think.
