"dusted / annoyed / I choke / I'm hung over / is that me in the mirror I'm looking at??"
The hyper, frenetic art punk progressive hard punches of "Head Trash" by Portland, Oregon six piece art punk band Buddy Wynkoop, and from their current split EP 10" vinyl called "Crippling Fun", is a full frontal mosh worthy assault that becomes more chaotic as it goes along. It is funny to call this song punk when you think that punk started out as a vehicle for those so called societal misfits who could really play there instruments very well. Well Buddy Wynkoop like many punk and art punk outfits are an incredible sonic machine of sorts, as tight as can be, surely as technical as any progressive rock band. It is helpful, after all, to be absolutely precise in order to convey explosions and implosions of sonic / emotional mayhem. There are obviously leans, comparisons to more contemporary other artists but when I listen to this band my head goes back to an amalgam of artists like Devo, like Television, like Pere Ubu I guess because their sound feels as foundational and because well, the 70's / 80's / 90's speak to me louder.
"Head Trash" conjures up so much compelling imagery. The manic sense expressed in truly interconnected high wired guitar playing, crazy killer bass runs, the feral drumming that feels like a fully awake Keith Moon and provocateur Seth Medeiros' vocal countenance that is at once, acerbic, self-deprecating, wide & wild eyed, as candid as fuck and with lines spewed like "I'm ugly / unimpressed / disheveled / a mess / is that me in the mirror I'm looking at? is that me in the mirror I'm looking at?", he and his prose may coincidentally be, for all of us, a mirror and a two way mirror at the same time, something to be interpreted as, maybe, an art punk mocumentary (ie social commentary on high).
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[Buddy Wynkoop is a six-piece art-punk band from Portland, Oregon, known for turning chaos into catharsis. With shout-sung vocals, jagged guitars, and spoken-word spirals, they channel the anxious pulse of modern life into something wild, weird, and unforgettable.
On stage, Buddy Wynkoop is pure electricity. Their explosive live shows blur the line between performance art and punk ritual, earning them a cult following and a reputation as one of Portland’s most vital acts. Loud, unpredictable, and impossible to ignore—this is a band you feel.]
