"You've got planets on the mind / The only of your kind / High on Earth's supply / Basking in sublime..."
The embracing poetic web spinning of "GNOMES" by L.A. based 'cosmic' rock band SENSOR NOISE, fronted by former child star, artist, actor, director Allisyn Synder, her husband (fellow Disney Channel alum) Dylan Synder and film composer / member of Pistol For Ringo- Steve Arm, takes you for a gentle ride, lulling into it's submission (not that you will struggle, you will let it happen. I so appreciate the lyrics that spin a story out of both declarative statements and abstract questions and you can float in the wondering and savor in the not knowing. The ultra dreaminess is so appreciated and the musical melodies provided by the guitar lines and bass lines are as integral as Allisyn Synder's evocative vocal performance, ethereal yet grounded.
I am loving the songwriting construction of "GNOMES" as well. The song really doesn't have a chorus, not in a conventional way. You could say it has a musical chorus that repeats but the lyrics don't repeat or you could just call them individual bridges. However you want to define what is happening, in a world of derivative pop creations, this reads utterly unique. Stunning in it's beauty and in regard to the straight up blending of psychedelic pop, indie rock, emo, art rock, college radio has me hard to find comparisons but, for some reason, upon the many listens of this track, at various times I felt adjacent artistry to Smashing Pumpkins, to MGMT, to Foxing and to The Pains of Being Pure At Heart. I know that might not make direct sense but it makes sense to me in terms of the wistful free form approach to the deeply emotional sonic painting here. "GNOMES" is accompanied with a wonderfully trippy DIY Official Video and will exist on their upcoming album "Sweet Tooth".
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[Recorded in a farmhouse in the rolling hills of Tehachapi, Gnomes is softer and sweeter than the group’s usual sound. Vocalist and lyricist Allisyn Snyder shares, “I’m deeply fascinated by the shared experiences of DMT users who encounter what they describe as machine elves or mechanical gnomes. It's said that they communicate with a visual language, and sing objects into existence. Making music is magical, whether or not you’re on psychedelics, so my lyrics come from a place of awe and wonder, a tribute to these mysterious gnomes.” The soul of this track is a droning guitar echoing from the indoor balcony of the farmhouse. "I originally played the lead line infused with fingerpicked chords," offers guitarist Steve Arm, "but like most of the ideas we brought to Tehachapi, the house helped shape the track. The chords were mesmerizing as they reverberated from the wooden walls and tile floor. They demanded no interruptions."
The band’s bassist, Dylan Snyder, has spent his life in the entertainment industry both in front of and behind the camera. He directs many of the SENSOR NOISE music videos and is always experimenting. Regarding the Gnomes video, Dylan shares, “We used a tried and true camera technique called forced perspective, famously used for the hobbits in Lord of the Rings. It was our first time playing with the technique and we found it works best when the camera was level with the ground. I was wearing a papier-mâché rock goblin mask, and we wanted to make Allisyn appear small next to me. We stood 12-15 feet away from each other and pretended to interact to sell the illusion that I was twice her size. I’m really proud of how this concept turned out and eager to keep trying new techniques in our future videos.”]

LYRICS
You've got planets on the mind
The only of your kind
High on Earth's supply
Basking in sublime
Staring at the ceiling
Savoring the feelings
Manifesting meaning
Are we just a fish that's dreaming?
Sunbeams in the sprinklers
Make rainbows in the grass
I'd love to taste your lips
I'm too afraid to ask
We watch the ants crawl down the hill
I always get a thrill
Standing by your side
Basking in sublime
My mind is reeling
Savoring the feelings
Manifesting meaning
Are we just a fish that's dreaming?
Can you see the gnomes?
There's magick in your bones
Can you spot a four leaf clover?
Will you cry when it's all over?
Is this all we'll ever be?
Is this all we'll ever be?
Is this all we'll ever be?
+
Is this all we'll ever be?
The Chicken Wheel will take you to the AP Go Fund Me- and any amount is so appreciated!
