The Lylacs track Imitation of Love feels kind of surfy from the get go. You have "that" guitar line that feels like something 60's surf rock band Dick Dale and the Deltones would play with big smiles on their faces. With the Lylacs there are measured half smiles, I mean the emotional output feels muted due to the lead vox which feel sort of sad, like a blanket blocking out the sun but there is something compelling about this sad core tone stirred up with such puzzle piece musicality.
This is the opening track from the bands 2020 "A New Age EP". Let's take a brief tour of this as Imitation of Love has me totally intrigued. The liquid dream sound as on Prayer is sad too but beautifully so. On Autumn Leaves the piano keys feel more organic but the wash of dream theater floods around them. This song too, has a sadness, a beautiful sadness. I want to give the lead singer a hug or a McDonalds Happy Meal (do they still have toys in them?). Echo Valley, whaaat?? has electric guitars and feels like a 70's drug psyche rock song that the Manson family would of danced to. A total shift that is kinda freaking me out. Finally, the title track A New Age quite literally feels like a crash of themes. On one hand it could be the theme for a 70's Gothic Horror Movie, Italian Horror and on the other hand, a Fantasy Movie (think Never Ending Story for adults), A German Fantasy Movie or a combination of both. Hmmmm? I think I need to interview this band soon and I think I am falling in serious love with this EP.
