"Lost in a little slice of hell"
I like when artists have their own self made descriptors for their music. Sophie Coran calls what she does, what she so expertly crafts as Noir & B. An accomplished composer, singer and musician, when I listen to her latest track Circles, her home made genre seems to make sense. The lush wave of "ooohs" and the delicious sort of 40's orchestration feels very much like songs from The Great American Songbook pushed through some indie pop filters. I am even detecting a hint of avant garde sort of hip hop accoutrements at the end.The Noir is with a big capitol N. Coran's vocal aesthetic is equally dolled up, her melodies and husky, yet smooth affectations twists jazz and neo soul flavors into something emotionally complex while wearing a mink stole (faux, of course).

“Coran's songs are complex studies of human connection…and they’re surprisingly contemporary, too” - NPR Music
“‘Permission’ feels like a tune from bygone era, sepia-toned and laden with sparse, yet impactful instrumentation – silken strings, haunting piano, and yearning vocals. Coran's delivery is delicate yet powerful, the subject matter deeply personal.” - EARMILK
“It will in its own, downtempo jazz-pop kind of way, get you moving…She could conceivably own a cool jazz persona, and refuse to be pigeonholed into an identity, chameleonically shifting” – WXPN’s The Key
