"in the midnight hour you're running for your life"
Killjoy & The Cutthroats is (for the moment) a mysterious entity. The band may or may not be a one man band. The twisted brainchild of a one K.L. Fortson (or so rumor has it) and while the track Running does feature female background singers and a somewhat eerie video that made me think a bit of John Carpenter's 1982 horror /sci-fi Halloween III (Season of the Witch), listening to the song, apart from doing so while watching the video, is a different experience. It is not to say that the video gives the song it's edge (although it does in someway) but listening to just the song itself allows the storytelling to come through. The narrative feels in tone like a 60's kind of doo wop tragedy with a tinge of horror pop vibe but only a tinge. The orchestration, is both cheeky and elegant. Fortson's vox feels at once like romance wave but also art rock theatrical. It is interesting, art punk charming and for me, feels like the proto punkery of bands like Human Sexual Response. Add the video and Running feels like something hallucinatory, a musical black licorice twist soaked in absinthe.
