"step into the light of the morning star"
The absolutely otherworldly sound of "Old Scratch" by Nashville based heavy psychedelic/rock n' roll band DE3RA and from their upcoming self-titled album dropping this October 16th (2020) might cause you anxiety or it might make you smile gleefully or it might do both (as it did for me). AND while the downbeat laden psychedelia meets majestic heavy metal tones is enough to make your head bob and clench your fist it is the absolutely surprising intro (at about one minute and 30) that elevates, that leaves a quizzical impression. That opening with discordant synth sounds layered with such a distinctive smudgy dirtiness that it feels like a parallel universe as (if) conceived by Greek-Canadian film director Panos Cosmatos (Mandy / Beyond the Black Rainbow). It is so incredibly engaging. This kind of HP Lovecraft-ian horror meets fucked up futuristic sound is startling but also so very, very cool. These synths work throughout in more nuanced ways but also serves as the outro and, in fact, the entire sound from start to finish has something askew which I love.

DE3RA, formed in 2017, is a four piece band that creates music with an emphasis on collaboration. Rob, Kevin, Haydn and Layton often switch instruments during their creative process, and all write/sing different songs in the project. The DE3RA sound is the outcome of four intense and different personalities. While each member has their own distinct writing style, every song fits into the unique style and sonics of DE3RA.
