"Killing Daffodils" by Brooklyn based Mordechai is from the outfit's debut EP "Chrysalis" (via Window Sill Records) and it stirs up dreams first and then some seriously heavy shit. When you first step inside this shape shifting diorama it feels like a folk indie slow dance, a beautiful waltz, actually, on worn wooden floors while the lilt of acoustic guitars, a guiding bass, shuffling beat and Darian Donovan Thomas' plaintive violin melodies caress, embrace you with sadness. When Jordan Rapaport's vox flow in on top of sparse downbeats, the sound is even more sad. His falsettos might give you a faint chill against your skin. Then (I imagine) with a flick of a switch and rolling fingers on amp volumes the song transforms into something else entirely as lead guitar and vocal screams erupt in a big impactful way. And I don't mean vocal wails but like screamcore vox, beautifully caustic and possessed (maybe). I did think of a kind of country folk-ified version of early, early Pixies (at one point). The tonal shift is surprising and amazing.
"This song was written while I was working on a farm in the Netherlands. It was recorded in a magic treehouse in Gowanus, Brooklyn by DIY exponent Paco Cathcart (The Cradle, Shimmer, Sweet Baby Jesus) and features violinist Darian Donovan Thomas as well as the rest of Mordechai". - Jordan Rapaport
Mordechai is Jordan Rapaport (songwriter, lead vox, guitar), Darian Thomas (violin, backing vox), Troy Vetri (bass), Connor Bush (guitar, backing vox) and John Wright (drums).
