"I'd have another drink if you were at the bottom of the glass..."
I almost always prefer to listen to a song presented to me through a video with my eyes closed. Maybe it is because I don't want to be swayed by the imagery or, rather, that I want the soundscape and lyrics to color something in me that is personal to me. Well, I made an exception with Proteins of Magic's trippy multicolored and malleable "One More Thing" just because when I caught a glimpse of the video I simply did not want to look away and, besides, the Official video was literally hand made by the New Zealand native, multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, multi-format artist Kelly Sherrod (aka Proteins of Magic).
Sherrod's very surreal, psychedelic claymation creation is far from Gumby and Pokey (or David and Goliath) and more trippy and weird in line with the bizarre creations of the Czech stop motion animator and director Jan Švankmajer or maybe a peak inside Wayne Coyne (The Flaming Lips) head while tripping on acid, at least how I would imagine that to be. So impressed with her creation's lip movements, so impressed.
The track itself pulsates like blood running through veins while spacey, sort of surreal and futuristic dance ticks and tocks float in and around Sherrod's evocative resonant vox. The drum beat or machine beats or combination of both is dangerously cool and almost space disco in temperament, orbiting around dancing planets.
[At the beginning of the pandemic, being in a self-imposed lockdown triggered an intense yearning for loved ones both overseas and close by. Kelly wrote “One More Thing” during this time, she explains — “I remember wondering if it would be at least a year before I was able to get back to New Zealand. Feeling at times trapped during lockdown for what ended up being 6 months, ultimately, I decided with my husband, that it was best for me to travel back to New Zealand with our 5 year old son, there I could focus on my album and our son could attend school”
Kelly explains "what i'm trying to convey is we all need more time, as people we all need another chance, the morphing clay characters are asking for empathy, especially during the pandemic, everyone is taking sides, but it can be an opportunity to understand each other, especially in America where I've been living, it is so divided right now."]

New Zealand native, multi-instrumentalist and unique multi-format artist Kelly Sherrod performs under the moniker Proteins of Magic. Splitting her time between NZ and Nashville, Tennessee, she most recently played bass and toured across Europe and America with Grammy and Academy Award winner Ryan Bingham. Following the release of three individual art gallery collections on canvas in recent years, she made a post-pandemic move back to New Zealand to focus on her debut solo project, Proteins of Magic. Winning “most promising female musician award” at the NZ Rockquest in high school, Kelly went on to study at Elam art school before making her debut into the NZ music scene fronting Punches with James Duncan (2003-09) and playing bass with Dimmer’s Shayne Carter (2007-09), which also included touring America with The Brian Jonestown Massacre. It was in 2009 when Kelly moved to Nashville, devoting herself to painting, recording in her home studio and touring. Soon after her son’s birth and the experiences that followed, Kelly found her personal drive and artistic ammunition to put her stories to music and canvas. Currently performing a series of shows in Auckland and beyond, Kelly takes over the stage with ambient layered loops of vocals and flute, adding rhythmic breath patterns, while triggering samples on her keyboard and playing piano. A living breathing performance, it morphs and transforms with every show. Proteins’ upcoming music collection debuts with the release of “One More Thing” on June 25, from her upcoming self-titled debut album.
