"Sunbeam dream / slowly ascending / all at once / your eyes begin crackling / shimmering fury / glistening glory..."
The progressive psych jam and dream theory of "Sunbeam Dream" by Cincinnati - Ohio psychedelic rock outfit In The Pines, and the title track of their upcoming fourth album dropping on September 12, 2025, is a shot of sonic adrenaline, vast with a potent free flowing musical narrative. From the very onset, you are pulled into this extremely sonically rich sound, the bass line potently leans into midrange places awashed with fuzz, the electric guitar pushing a kind of funky rock rhytmn groove patterned in a syncopated way that bridges, pumps off the bass, the drums absolutely in the pocket working that high hat as part of the intricate puzzle or part of the motor's gearing. The downbeat strikes are so killer as is the lead breaks that drop in creating these masterful eruptions. The vocal aesthetic goes counter intuitive, no wild yelps or gritting growls but rather a rather mellow aesthetic, dreamy and, dare I say, sort of 70's psychedelic or garden rock-esque, in fact a progressive band like Yes even came to mind.
The progressive nature, the alt rock prowess, the wide cross generational psychedelia, the potent surf punk-isms and even classic rock jamminess is so beautifully vast and while In The Pines is not mining any of these artists specifically I feel like what they are doing is artfully adjacent to an amalgam of bands like THE OSEES (Lupine Dominus popped in my head while listening), super group Tomahawk, Porcupine Tree, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and, yes, YES. You might think of other sonic connections and while it is not important it is always a sort of interesting exercise.
In the end,"Sunbeam Dream" is a magnetic song that you want to listen to as well as imaging playing, for you musicians out there it is that kind of song, one that bands will cover. It portends a dynamic, dreamy album.
"Sunbeam dream
slowly ascendingall at once
your eyes begin crackling
shimmering fury
glistening glory
you may have to give it back
one thought is all it is
for one brief moment I see it
but it’s slipping away
sunbeam dream
please never leave
you’re so pretty"

Wide-eyed and longing, In The Pines creates its own sacred geometry of rock. Through unexpected collisions of psychedelia, prog rock, shoegaze, and blues, the band decorates a sprawling sonic landscape with lyrics and melodies that walk a tightrope of restless, youthful exploration and mystical profundity.
