"so there's that courage / it takes to stem the flow / some distant angel / cheered me on from above..."
The grand matador caped, dramatically* spun "Horn Of Plenty", by Los Angeles indie band sheep eyes, feels like 80's indie rock, punk rock and 90's post punk pushed through a meat grinder. I am loving the amount of pure rock joy, the askew sensibility, the free wheeling choppy guitar jags, the accompanying beautifully mad bass and drumming as solid as can be, Luke Keali'ipono Moran's vocal countenance full of sultry spice while wearing a patina of melancholia and wanderlust. It is a dashing song really, full of dark romance with artistic hints of TV On The Radio's "The Wrong Way" and Fugazi's "Waiting Room" and The Psychedelic Furs' "Here Come Cowboys" and, last but not least, Echo & The Bunnymen's "Lips Like Sugar", sort of all at once in it's artistic / attitudinal spirit.
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[sheep eyes is an LA-based post-punk/art rock band inspired by the likes of Television, Ought, and Suburban Lawns. Born out of the duller days of the pandemic and a desire to cut through the distorted, reverb-obsessed sounds its city is more known for, this is a project that seeks to renounce the gloom and literalism of today in search of something raw, dancy, and fun all while remaining true to its roots in the brighter side of post-punk.]
[This is the third single from our upcoming album which will come out in April of this year. Written by Luke Keali'ipono Moran & recorded with friends from the Los Angeles DIY music scene. Inspired by American mythology, 70's post-punk bands like The Feelies & Television as well as LA psychedelic bands like Love.]
Vocals, Guitar, Synth: Luke Keali'ipono Moran
Guitar: Nicky Howard
